In this paper, we compare and contrast two types of timber models that have been used for public policy analysis. These models have been variously used to predict price, inventory and market welfare impacts under different exogenous forces that impact timber markets. The framework and theory for each model type is presented and discussed. We then thoroughly test the two model types across six potential exogenous shocks to timber markets, ranging from instantaneous demand shocks to gradual supply adjustments. Our comparison indicates that these models predict potentially important differences in timber market behavior. These differences are important to consider for those who do public policy analysis. |

Price and expenditure elasticities at retail level for 11 fresh fruits and 10 fresh vegetables were estimated by employing a composite demand system approach and using annual data. Most fresh fruits and vegetables were found to respond significantly to changes in their own prices but insignificantly to changes in total expenditures. The demand for fresh fruit group appeared to have had a clear upward trend since 1973. However, no significant trends were found in the demands for individual fresh fruits or vegetables. The study partially incorporated the interdependent demand relationships between fresh fruits (vegetables) and all other commodities, yet effectively avoided the problem of insufficient degrees of freedom. |

Despite much hard work in recent years, economics and political science remain largely separate disciplines. Few meaningful bridges have been build between them, and hence useful gains from intellectual trade between the two have not been realized. Some of the most recent efforts to construct such a bridge are critically evaluated. It is shown that this literature suffers from a lack of theoretical balance between economic and political theory; unrealistic, temporally aggregated conceptions of political-economic equilibrium; failure to incorporate theoretically meaningful stochastic elements of economic and political processes; and the absence of a coherent methodology for gauging the empirical power of political-economic models. In the spirit of the AJPS... |

Alleviating excess demand for water is a reoccurring issue in California. An analytical framework is developed to examine the different ways to eliminate excess demand for water in California. Four ways are examined in the marshallian cross framework. First, shifting the supply schedule to the right. Second, shifting the demand schedule to the left. Third, increasing the price of water to the equilibrium point. Fourth, closing the excess demand gap by administratively rationing the quantity of water consumed. The role of institutions in determining the price of water and building infrastructure to increase the stock of water is examined An analysis of household water consumption behavior during the drought of 1987-91 reveals that households voluntarily... |

A content analysis is conducted on the Agricultural and Resource Economics Review the official publication of the Northeastern Agricultural and Resource Economics Association, to determine whether the journal has maintained a strong regional focus and whether there has been a narrow concentration of published articles in subject area and methodology. The results show that in the 1990s (1) the share of articles that do not focus on the Northeast has increased tremendously and (2) more articles used quantitative techniques than nonquantitative methods. |

In 1989, The Cornell Program on Dairy Markets and Policy collaborated with the Texas A&M Agricultural and Food Policy Center to form a National Institute for Livestock and Dairy Policy (NILDP). The Institute is a focal point for a neutral and objective analyses of the consequences of alternative government policies on the livestock, dairy, and poultry industries and the broader economics of livestock and dairy markets. Based on their respective strengths and emphases, Texas A&M is the lead institution on livestock and poultry sector analysis, and Cornell is the lead institution on dairy sector analysis. The Institute has been supported by a special research grant through the U. S. Department of Agriculture since 1989. The Dairy Farm Analysis... |

An R&D based endogenous growth - applied general equilibrium model is developed from an underlying analytical model which combines Romer's capital variety with Grossman and Helpman's multi-sector open economy model. The transitional dynamics of the analytical model are derived. For numerical implementation, a time discrete empirical model, with an Armington structure, is fit to East Asian data of the social accounting matrix variety. Simulations of trade reform are performed and their static and dynamic effects compared. The transition paths of the state variables are found to have a half-life of five to six periods. A solution of the Social Planner's problem, and interventions which seek to obtain this outcome from the decentralized model are also... |

A dynamical model of soil phosphorus carryover in grazed pasture provides the basis for bioeconomic optimization of fertiliser rates. A linear constraint is introduced to optimise the allocation of limited funds to fertiliser on several farm blocks, each of which represents a different land and/or stock class. The optimal constrained maintenance application of fertiliser to each block is calculated, and an heuristic approach to this equilibrium is suggested. In some cases this involves withholding of fertiliser from unresponsive blocks. The dynamical model and economic optimisation method have been implemented in a commercial fertiliser planning decision support tool Outlook. |

The Jiaozhou bay (People's Republic of China, Shandong province, Qingdao county) is a 400 km2 semi-closed bay around which socio-economic activities have developed. More than 6.7 million of inhabitants live and work around this bay. ln 1995 the shrimp production (Penaeus orientalis) raised to 300-400 Metric Ton, more than 77,000 MT of clams (Ruditapes philippinarum) more than 12,000 MT (Metric Ton) of oysters (Ostrea plicatula), more than 14,000 MT of mussels (Mytilus edulis) and more than 25,000 MT of scallops (Chlamys farreri and Argopecten irradians) have been harvested. This paper present an overview of the Jiaozhou bay (rivers running into the bay, factories .settled on the coast line, the population, the means of transport ... ), the different kinds... |
